The ability of silicon nanoparticles to penetrate affected cells and, having released the active substance, quickly degrade without accumulation in the body, was confirmed by researchers from the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University and their German colleagues.
Theranostics (“therapy” and “diagnostics”)implies a process of simultaneous diagnostics and treatment. In particular theranostics is used for treatment of cancer. But not all nanoparticles meet the requirement of biocompatibility. According to Lubov Osminkina, Senior Research Fellow at the Physics Department of M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University, although nanoparticles act quickly, reach the target and treat diseases, in months to come patients experience complications in liver, kidneys and other organs. According to Lubov Osminkina it is caused by the fact that not all nanoparticles (including those of gold, silver, titanium oxide, cadmium selenide) are excreted from the body, but enter the blood circulation and are trapped in internal organs, leading to complications. At the same time, silicon nanoparticles do not adversely affect the body and even help, as their degradation product, hydrated silica, is required by the body for bone strengthening and connective tissue growth. That is why porous silicon nanoparticles are innocuous for the host and may be used for theranostics of many types of cancer.
