A Drug for Cancer Detection

An event has occurred in Russian nuclear medicine.  A radiopharmaceutical for positron emission tomography (PET) synthesized using local equipment at Snezhinsk (Chelyabinsk region) has passed tests in the quality laboratory of Chelyabinsk oncology dispensary.

The first portion of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) was manufactured in May at Snezhinsk Federal State Unitary Institution  “Russian Federal Nuclear Center – All-Russian Research Institute of Technical Physics”. The radiopharmaceutical was synthesized using cyclotron CC 18/9  manufactured at Saint Petersburg. It will be used in the oncology dispensary for PET-diagnostics – one of the most popular techniques in the medicine of today. The method will help assess the  stage of tumor growth, differentiate  malignant and benign tumors, assess body response to treatment, detect primary malignant tumor in case of metastases.
