Pharmacist Per Se
A mobile laboratory with dimensions of a small fridge, has been designed by engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The development was sponsored by the US Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA).
That invention may make a revolution in the field of drug manufacture.
The technology is based on a mecrobioreactor which is supplied with genetically modified yeast cells. The device consists of two supplementary and two basic modules: the first module is intended for reactions of synthesis of the future drug from yeast cells, and the second – for product purification.
The mobile laboratory may be adjusted for manufacture of four drugs – a sedative, an antihistamine, a local anesthetic and an antidepressant. The process of adjustment would take a few hours. So if one finds himself, conventionally speaking, in a lifeless desert without medical aid, but having the Massachusetts Institute of Technology invention at hand, the needed drug may be obtained.
