Siberians Join Forces
A network center for cranio-facial reconstruction is being established in Tomsk.
The initiative belongs to researchers from Tomsk State University and the Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science of Siberian Department, Russian Academy of Sciences (ISPMS SD RAS). The idea of the center was supported in Tomsk research institute of oncology, Novosibirsk institute of traumatology and orthopaedics, Innovative medical and technological center (Novosibirsk), Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU). They joined into a concortium to develop bone implants.
The draft is aimed at 3D production of implants, particularly, for cranio-facial surgery. Site employees will develop ceramic materials, technologies, provide toxicological and medical research. The new technology will enable reconstruction of any bone sturctures – small and large joints, intervertebral discs, skull bones. The need for the new development is quite significant, as until recently Russia did not have locally produced authorized and approved high quality implants, elements and implant systems for traumatology and orthopedics. In most cases internationally manufactured implants and endografts not affordable for most people in Russia.
Now the problem of rehabilitation of patients after serious injuries with congenital defects, cancer patients after major surgeries will be solved. Nanoceramic implants are naturally adopted by the body, as evidenced by recent results of studies conducted by Russian and Greek scientists, who tested bone substitutes developed by researchers from the TSU and ISPMS SD RAS within the framework of a Federal Target Program (14.607.21.0069-RFMEFI60714X0069).
