Insurance Against Epidemic Threats
The issue of struggle against infections, including numerous drug-resistant infections, is on today’s agenda both of the medical and pharmaceutical community, as well as among economists and politicians.
Recalling recent Ebola epidemic, the forum participants discussed and accepted the idea of Global Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) which should become an insurance against epidemic and pandemic threats. At the first stage at least 1 bln dollar investments will be required for the efforts by coalition. It will secure the ability to implement the first emergency measures and develop vaccines against MERS-CoV, Lassa fever and Nipah virus and prevent epidemics. Vaccine candidates for the above-mentioned infections are already available.
Initial investments (USD 460 mln) have been made by Governments of Germany, Japan, Norway as well as the Fund of Bill and Miranda Gates and Wellcome Trust.
