The Wave Will Break the Stones. Kidney Stones.
Within the framework of the federal program PHARMA 2020 an experimental extracorporal lithotripter LT-1 intended for surgical treatment of kidney stone disease, has been developed at a manufacturing site of Swabe Holding, a Rostech State Corporation company. The device has already successfully passed the acceptance inspection.
According to Ivan Ozhgikhin, Deputy General Manager of Swabe, the new device uses a shock-wave generator and a shock wave emitter of original design. Compared to the existing similar products, the new lithotripter is characterized by a significantly lower shock wave impulse duration, which helps reduce the traumatism and enables split smaller stones in kidneys, as well as gall bladder and gall duct stones.
The shock wave which splits the stones, is created by an electromagnetic generator. The radiator reaches the patient’s body through a water cushion. A state-of-art small dose X-ray unit with an C-arm and a US diagnostic unit are used to target the radiator to the stone and monitor the process of splitting.
The new device will help remove stones of 1.5 to 10 mm in diameter from the human body.
